First off, Darth Maul seems to just be ominously looming in the background while everyone is quite oblivious of his presence. This is a very crucial and meaningful part of the poster. The fact that he is in the back shows the hidden, dark evil tendencies that lurk deep in the "background" of all people's personalities. It also hints at the hidden dark nature hiding inside young Anakin, depicted here as an innocent boy in the forefront, tendencies that eventually grow too strong and overwhelm him.

All the characters shown in between Anakin and Darth Maul on the Episode I poster aren't just there for mere show either. They all depict things which separate Anakin from the dark side, but some of these things will also be the forces that drive him there.

Obi-wan Kenobi's pose, light saber extended, shows his eternal struggle and drive to protect Anakin and show him the right way. It also symbolizes Obi-wan Kenobi's eventual battle with Darth Maul, on Anakin's behalf, and the many that will follow.
